Jason Gehring is a seasoned trial lawyer who brings nearly two decades of experience handling complex disputes for businesses, individuals, municipalities, and public officials. Over the course of his career, Jason has tried many cases, argued before appellate courts throughout Wisconsin—including multiple appearances before the Wisconsin Supreme Court—and developed particular strength in matters involving complicated financial, valuation, governmental, and legal issues.

Jason’s interest in those issues began as an undergraduate, where he studied economics and political science.

Economics became a lasting intellectual interest, particularly the questions of how businesses, property, and other assets are valued and how financial incentives shape decision-making. That interest in finance, valuation, and economic analysis has followed Jason throughout his legal career and continues to influence the way he approaches complex litigation.

His study of political science complemented that financial background and sparked an interest in government, public institutions, and the legal challenges facing municipalities and local officials. Together, those disciplines provided a natural foundation for the diverse litigation practice Jason would ultimately build.

After graduating cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School, Jason joined a well-established Milwaukee litigation firm, where he spent nearly twenty years developing an exceptionally broad practice. He represented municipalities and elected officials in significant governmental disputes, handled commercial, real-estate, property-tax, and other financially complex matters, and represented parties in serious personal injury and premises-liability cases.

That breadth of experience gave Jason the opportunity to litigate in virtually every type of forum in which a Wisconsin civil dispute might arise. He has represented clients in state and federal trial courts, before the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and Wisconsin Supreme Court, and in proceedings before administrative agencies and specialized tribunals, including the Wisconsin Elections Commission, Wisconsin Tax Appeals Commission, Boards of Review, and Condemnation Commissions.

Just as importantly, Jason became a trial lawyer in the truest sense. He has tried numerous jury and bench trials and handled cases through every stage of litigation. That experience taught him not only how to prepare and try a case, but how to identify the issues that actually drive value and risk, simplify complicated problems, and develop a strategy around the client’s ultimate objective.

During his years at the firm, Jason rose from a young associate to an equity shareholder and member of his former firm’s management committee, helping lead the firm while continuing to maintain an active litigation practice. That experience gave him not only the perspective of a seasoned advocate, but also a firsthand understanding of the business considerations, financial realities, and practical judgment that often matter just as much as the legal issues themselves.

Jason brought that perspective to Barton Cerjak because he saw an opportunity to help build a litigation firm around the kind of practice he values most: sophisticated work, meaningful responsibility, deep courtroom experience, and a relentless focus on solving difficult problems for clients. His combination of financial acumen, municipal experience, and trial judgment makes him a natural fit for the firm’s complex business disputes, serious personal injury cases, municipal litigation, property and valuation matters, and other high-stakes civil cases.

Across those matters, Jason takes a practical and disciplined approach. He understands that the strongest litigation strategy rarely comes from legal doctrine alone. It comes from understanding the economics of the dispute, the people involved, the client’s objectives, the available leverage, and the risks on both sides.

Jason’s goal is to reduce even the most complicated dispute to the issues that matter most and build a strategy around achieving the client’s real objective—whether that means negotiating from a position of strength, prevailing on a critical motion, pursuing an appeal, or taking the case through trial.

Background

Jason was born and raised in Heidelberg, Germany. He now lives on Milwaukee’s East Side with his wife and three children.

Outside the office, Jason enjoys many of the things that make Milwaukee home. Depending on the season, you can find him watching his kids play soccer and other sports, playing soccer himself, cheering on the Brewers or Bucks, or biking to one of Milwaukee’s beer gardens.
